GIMP (short for GNU Image Manipulation Program) is an open-source Photoshop alternative that still offers advanced image editing capabilities – despite being completely free.
It’s a flexible all-round editor just like Photoshop that you can use for digital painting, photo retouching, manipulation, image compositing, and much more.
GIMP offers a huge set of tools, similar to Photoshop’s, including brushes for painting, color correction, cloning, as well as a choice of selection tools. You can work with layers and blending modes, and there’s even a history toolbar to quickly undo and redo things.
GIMP allows you to customize the interface to make it look similar to Photoshop, so it’s easier to make the switch if you’re coming from Photoshop or planning on upgrading to Photoshop in the future.
The program recognizes most of the common file formats and also supports more specialized image editing formats, such as TIFF and PSD. What’s more, GIMP comes with a built-in file manager, very similar to Adobe Bridge.
If that’s sounds like something you want to try out, you’ll be happy to hear that GIMP is available for Windows, Mac and Linux.
