“Everyone is an artist” is a famous quote by a painter. But is it true that everyone is an artist? Fact is we are all born creative, but sometimes our creativity gets buried under societal norms and bad experiences. In this post, we talk about why everyone is considered an artist and why you too should follow your creative passion!

Why is it true that everyone is an artist?

Many people struggle to find their purpose in life. They don’t know what they want to do, they don’t feel their calling.

Work takes up a huge part of our life. Every day, we spend at least 8 hours at work, not to speak of commuting from our home to our workplace and back. For many of us, work is what puts the food on our tables.

Understandably, many people are unhappy in their jobs. They feel stuck in their daily routines, and don’t really know what direction to go.

Does that sound familiar to you? It definitely sounds familiar to me, because I used to be the same. After all, this is what society teaches us.

But then, coincidentally, I discovered the creative in me. After ten years of practice, I decided to start a digital art business and launch my artist website.

During my artistic journey and after a lot of research, I learned that we are all creative beings by nature. One could say it is true that everyone is an artist.

Does that mean that we all have to create traditional or digital art? No. Certainly not. But I believe that we are all meant to create something.

Is it true that everyone is an artist?

“Everyone is an artist.”

This is a famous quote by German artist Joseph Beuys (1921–1986), who was one of the most influential figures of the avant-garde movement in Europe in the 1970s and 1980s.

Beuys believed in a universal human creativity and was convinced that art has the power to bring about revolutionary change.

But does that really make it true that everyone is an artist?

Creativity extends to all areas of our life – designing, writing, painting, jewelrymaking, performing, singing, songwriting, gardening,
woodworking, but also teaching, mentoring, entrepreneurship, and many more.

How do you know your creative strength? Finding your creative calling in life is not as hard as you might think. Just ask yourself what you are most excited about doing.

Everyone has something they are fired up for. When you are stuck at your workplace, what do you think about and wish you would be able to do now (instead of the job that is not meaningful to you)?

This usually is your creative passion. It doesn’t have to be making art in the ‘traditional’ sense, such as painting or drawing. It doesn’t have to be digital art either. It doesn’t even have to be visual arts or performing arts, etc.

Art can be anything that allows you to express yourself, apply your creative skills and imagination.

Why is everyone considered an artist?

Lately, the word ‘artist’ has been in use a lot. It has become a term to describe someone who looks at life ‘in a creative way’. They might work in new ways, challenge the status quo, or bring about change in other ways.

This kind of ‘art’ also comes from a deeper place within and is a direct reflection of that person’s personality.

Nevertheless, just like any other type of art, it requires effort and dedication to get better at it and eventually become a master at your craft.

Is everyone born an artist?

I believe that every one of us is born creative. Just give any child some crayons and paper, and they will start drawing and scribbling on the page.

However, being an ‘artist’, in its actual sense, requires dedication, commitment, and constant practice.

Generally, artists feel ‘a calling’ to do what they are doing. They find the creative activity extremely joyful, and oftentimes they are in a state of flow while they are doing it.

The flow state is a state of mind where we lose the sense of time and self. In our everyday lives, our brainwaves are in a fast-moving state, which scientists refer to as beta waves. In the flow state, however, our brain slows down and we get into a state of alpha waves. We are focused on the task at hand, and we perform and feel our best.

Others might find the same creative activity tedious and wearisome, while the ‘artist’ is completely enthused over it.

You know that you are a born artist for your craft, if you find real value in what you are doing.

Can everybody become artist?

Think about it this way: life is short and we are meant to enjoy it and live it to the fullest.

If art is what brings you joy, you should consider pursuing it and dedicating yourself to it.

The hardest thing why not everybody becomes an artist is because we tend to be scared of what others will think about us.

Even though we all need art in our lives, and most of us surround ourselves with some form of art, ‘becoming an artist’ is still tainted with a lot of prejudice.

‘Being an artist’ is not a real job. Making art doesn’t pay the bills. You are not an artist, if you didn’t go to art school. The list goes on.

Overcoming these preconceptions and the fears connected with them is probably the greatest challenge in becoming an artist.

Whether or not you decide to become an artist ultimately depends on how much you love what you are doing. To find true happiness in life, you’ll need to follow your passion.

That doesn’t mean you’ll need to quit your job right away and become a full-time artist. Take one step at a time and see what feels right for you. Maybe you choose to pursue your creative passion as a hobby. Maybe you pluck up your courage and start a digital art business.

Whatever you do, what matters is that it feels good to you. Whatever your skills and talents, it is true that everyone is an artist, including YOU!

That said, I wish you lots of joy and success on your creative journey. I hope this post was helpful to, and if you want to learn more about creating, showcasing, and selling your art, feel free check out more posts in my Get Inspired & Create Art and Showcase & Sell Your Art sections!
