Even beginners can build visually stunning portfolios and sell their work, with plans starting at $16 per month.

There’s a much larger selection of templates, though not all of them focus on visual appeal. Simply put, both are cloud-based website builders, tailored for individuals and small businesses. They come with drag-and-drop editors that let you create websites without any coding knowledge. Each one offers a selection of premade templates that you can customize and fill with your own content.

You don’t need to purchase separate hosting or a domain, as you do with WordPress. Both Squarespace and Wix host your site and allow you to connect or buy a custom domain. They also let you sell your artwork, products, or services, although pricing and features differ.
However, that doesn’t mean both platforms deliver the same ease of use and are as good for every artist’s needs.

For this review, I’ve evaluated Squarespace and Wix across a number of different aspects that particularly matter to artists. These include ease of use of the website builder and backend, visual appeal of the templates, integrations for functionality, e-commerce capabilities to sell your artwork, and more.
By the end of this review, you’ll know about the pros and cons of both Squarespace and Wix, and you can make an informed decision about which platform is the best fit for your creative needs.

Which Is A Good Website Builder For Artists?
First off, the onboarding process is equally simple with both Squarespace and Wix.
When you start a free trial on Squarespace, you can quickly select your website goals. Do you want to sell products and services? Or also memberships and courses? Do you want a portfolio to showcase your work? A contact form for customers to reach out to you?
Just select what you’re planning to do with your website and after that Squarespace will suggest a number of suitable templates. Or, you can choose to have your site built with Squarespace Blueprint, the AI website builder.
Wix takes a similar approach. But instead of ticking multiple-choice questions, you can tell the AI tool directly what your site is about. Based on your input, Wix will automatically create a website and install apps that match your needs.
After that, you can still choose a pre-designed template or let Wix ADI (Artificial Design Intelligence) generate a site for you.
With your website set up, you can go to the backend and choose the content (posts, pages, portfolios, etc.) you want to edit.
Both Squarespace and Wix come with visual drag-and-drop editors that let you design your website without any coding skills. They are so-called WYSIWYG (“What You See Is What You Get”) editors, meaning you can see in real time what your website will look like to visitors.
Wix has two options: the classic Wix Editor and the Wix Studio editor. The classic editor is sufficient to create a basic website and ideal for beginners who prefer a simpler user interface.
Wix Studio, on the other hand, is aimed at professional designers who want advanced tools and pixel-perfect customization. That said, it still doesn’t come close to the design possibilities you get with WordPress.

In comparison, Squarespace’s editor doesn’t offer the same level of design flexibility. It’s a structured, section-based editor, meaning you can’t drag elements just anywhere, you can only arrange them within a defined grid.
This takes away from design flexibility, but it also ensures that everything stays aligned and visually consistent.
With Wix, you have full design control, but it’s easier to accidentally misalign elements or create spacing inconsistencies. The learning curve is slightly steeper and you might spend more time tweaking things to get them just right.
By contrast, Squarespace requires minimal design effort, making it an excellent choice for users who want to create professional-looking layouts quickly.

Both Wix and Squarespace feature sleek, professional templates that suit most creative niches.
Wix has an impressive library of over 900 templates. In its “Creative” category, you’ll find templates for Photography, Design, Creative Arts, Portfolio, and even multiple other sub-categories.
The Photography section alone features more than 100 website templates to choose from:
Squarespace, in contrast, offers a more curated collection of “only” around 200 templates in total. While this might sound limiting compared to Wix’s 4 times greater selection, you must keep in mind that all Squarespace templates focus on aesthetics, ensuring your site looks modern and professional out of the box.
There are categories for Art & Design, Fashion, Photography, and Portfolio sites that feature several dozens of carefully crafted templates, from minimalist grid galleries to full-bleed layouts.
The big advantage is that all official Squarespace templates are free. There are no additional fees, no premium tiers, and no locked features. If that isn’t quite enough for you, you can also purchase third-party templates from marketplaces like Etsy or Creative Fabrica.

Both platforms offer plenty of customization options without any coding required. You can adjust fonts, colors, rearrange sections, and add or remove elements with one click.
It’s also important to keep in mind that neither Wix nor Squarespace allows you to switch templates once you’ve started building your website. If you want more design flexibility and change templates later on, you might consider WordPress as an option.

For users with coding experience, Squarespace provides access to advanced template customization options. You can add custom CSS via the Style Editor and insert custom HTML into individual pages or posts. You can even inject code in the site’s header, footer, and other layout sections.
Wix also supports adding custom code (you can insert HTML blocks and adjust styling using CSS through the editor), but its flexibility is more limited compared to Squarespace.

Both Squarespace and Wix provide add-ons for more functionality.
At the time of writing, Squarespace features around 40+ official extensions on its website. There are extensions for all essential needs, including marketing, eCommerce, SEO, and analytics.
Artists can add extensions for drop-shipping and print-on-demand, such as Printify, to deliver art prints globally.
Wix’s app marketplace currently offers well over 300 integrations and services. This includes, for example, integrations for your Etsy shop, print-on-demand providers like Printify, Printful, and Gelato, email marketing services like MailerLite and Constant Contact, and several SEO tools to choose from.
Furthermore, Wix also supports third-party integrations through custom code and APIs.
Just like with its templates, Squarespace also takes a more curated approach to integrations. It offers fewer integrations, but those available are carefully controlled.
Wix, on the other hand, provides a much wider range, but the sheer amount of options can make things more complex and requires thorough management on your end to ensure everything works together smoothly.

Is Squarespace Or Wix Better To Sell Art Online?
Squarespace lets you sell a variety of physical and digital products, as well as memberships, on all four Squarespace plans. Since all plans include unlimited storage, you can also sell high-resolution art files, e-books, and other large digital downloads without worrying about space limits.
Squarespace’s fully integrated ecommerce and advanced shipping options, including a robust backend for managing your store and inventory, are available starting from the Business plan ($23/month) and higher.
In contrast, Wix doesn’t allow you to sell on all its plans. You’ll need to purchase at least the Core plan ($29/month) to accept payments and access basic eCommerce features. This plan includes limited storage of up to 50GB, though this may be sufficient for most creative sellers.
For more storage and advanced eCommerce functionality, you’ll need to upgrade to the Business plan ($39/month) or higher.
Both platforms have their native payment gateways, Wix Payments and Squarespace Payments, available in select countries. Squarespace accepts Klarna, Afterpay, Apple Pay, ACH, and all major credit cards.
Wix accepts a wider range of methods, including Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, Tap to Pay, local currencies, and BNPL options such as Affirm, Afterpay, and Klarna.
When it comes to fees, Squarespace doesn’t charge transaction fees on invoices but takes a 3% fee on sales through your store on the Business plan. However, there are zero transaction fees on its Commerce plans, starting at $28/month.
Wix charges 2.6% per transaction for Wix POS, and around 2.9% for credit or debit card payments, depending on the provider.

Which Platform Is Better For Art Bloggers?
If you’ve read my post on why every artist should have a blog, you know I cannot emphasize enough how helpful a blog is get the word out about your art and attract traffic.
The good news is that both Squarespace and Wix offer solid blogging features. Both platform allow you to create an unlimited number of posts, organize them into categories and tags, schedule them, and engage with readers in the comment sections.
Likewise, both Wix’s Rich Text Editor and Squarespace’s Fluid Engine Editor make it easy to format your posts and embed images, videos, newsletter opt-ins, and so on.

With each platform’s built-in SEO tools, you can optimize your content for search engines. This includes editing meta titles, descriptions, and URL slugs for individual blog posts to improve search engine visibility.
The only features Squarespace has over Wix are integrated memberships and paywall settings, meaning only paying subscribers can read your content. However, for an art blog aimed at attracting traffic, you don’t want to use this feature.

Is Your Artist Website Secure With Squarespace And Wix?
When it comes to security and site protection, both Squarespace and Wix make sure that your website remains safe with regular automatic backups, DDoS protection, and the ability to restore previous versions.
Storage, however, is limited on Wix’s lower-tier plans. The cheapest plan only provides 2GB of storage. That’s often not enough for visual artists who need to upload high-resolution images and timelapse videos of their artwork.
Squarespace offers unlimited storage across all its plans. This means even the entry-level plan provides ample space for large media files. With prices starting at $16 per month (billed annually), this storage feature makes Squarespace a far more affordable choice for artists creating their first website.
For comparison, if you want unlimited storage on Wix, you have to be on the Business Elite plan for $159 per month.

Where Do You Get The Better Value For Your Money?
Both Squarespace and Wix have four pricing plans.
As of 2025, Squarespace’s entry-level plan starts $16/month when billed annually ($23/month if billed monthly). It includes unlimited bandwidth, storage, mobile optimization, free templates, and a free custom domain for the first year. This Personal plan is great for portfolio sites where you occasionally want to sell some of your artwork.
As your art business grows and you want to start selling on a more professional level, you can upgrade to the Business plan at $23 monthly (billed annually) or at $36 when billed monthly. This plan allows you to sell products and services directly on your site with a 3% transaction fee per sale, and provides features such as a built-in checkout and a shipping rate calculator.
To remove the transaction fee, you can upgrade to one of Squarespace’s Commerce plans at any time. The Basic Commerce plan at $28 per month comes with more advanced sales and marketing tools, while the Advanced Commerce plan also lets you sell subscriptions and use promotions such as discount codes.
Wix is one of the few platforms that offers a free plan. However, it comes with very limited features and Wix branding. Plus, Wix will also display ads on your site. That’s why the free plan is only an option for testing the platform—for an unlimited amount of time.
Wix’s Light plan starts at $17 per month. You will also get a free domain for one year, but storage is limited to 2GB and eCommerce capability is not included, meaning you cannot sell your work.
To start selling, you’ll need to be on at least Wix’s Core plan at $29 per month. It includes basic eCommerce support, basic marketing tools, access to payment services, and up to 50 GB of storage.
For more advanced eCommerce features (Wix calls them “Standard eCommerce”) and “standard” marketing tools, you’ll need to upgrade to the Business plan at $39 monthly. However, to get access to the full suite of eCommerce features and marketing tools, as well as unlimited storage, you must select the Business Elite plan at $159 per month.
When it comes to Squarespace vs Wix for artists in terms of pricing, to get the same level of eCommerce features you get on Squarespace for $23 with the Business plan, you need to pay $39/months for Wix’s Business plan.
Likewise, Squarespace’s most advanced plan at $52 per month is roughly three times less expensive than Wix’s comparable elite plan at $159.
