The Memphis Design is a colorful geometric art style that first came up in the 1980s. Just like the neon trend, it’s making a comeback in modern art.
Originally, the Memphis Design was introduced by Italian designer Ettore Sottsass. 30 years later, it was picked up by designers of multiple disciplines and made its return as the Memphis Revival.
Artists, fashion, interior and graphic designers have been revisiting the typical design patterns, such as bright color blocks, frames, shelves, and emoji-like décor elements. The furniture is colorful, kitschy and exaggerated.
Thanks to dedicated Instagram accounts, in particular Sottsass’ own Instagram page, the Memphis Design experienced its revival in recent times.
