How do you know your taste in art?

There are various factors that may influence our taste in art – either consciously or unconsciously.

For one, you might like a certain style of art because you see it in a renowned museum or at a fancy art show. Because it is there on exhibition, you find it ‘worth admiring’.

Psychologists refer to that phenomenon as the ‘confirmation bias’. They explain that some art lovers base their choices on the notability of a work to confirm their good taste in art. Added to that the more you view a particular type of art or the artwork of a specific artist, the more you may feel drawn to it.

At the same time, there may also be biological aspects that affect our taste in art. Some researchers agree that we have inherent character traits that make us dislike certain types of art.

If that’s the case, the question remains whether we despise some art because it is ‘bad’ or because we have simply not been exposed to it sufficiently. However, there is no ultimate answer to that question…

What does renaissance art say about a person?

What does abstract art say about a person?

You’ve picked the abstract painting. That means you are open to experiences, you are intellectual and emotional.

Fans of abstract works demonstrate more of an intellectual fascination with art. Furthermore, they tend to have contentious personality traits and controversial ideas.

This doesn’t come as a surprise since abstract artists used their work to rise out of the conventions and limitations of traditional, representational art.

Robert Delaunay was one of the first artists to experiment with abstract art in the early 20th century. His works are a good example of how abstract art breaks out of the boundaries set by previous forms of art. It is highly creative and mind-boggling. So may be the people who admire abstract art…

What does cubist art say about a person?

You’ve picked the cubist painting. That means you strive against the stream, you are open-minded and inventive.

Fans of cubism are known to be unconventional and open to new ideas. The cubist movement was a reaction against traditional forms of art like impressionism and realism. Cubists intentionally failed to conform to drawing conventions by depicting a subject from a variety of angles.

Pablo Picasso was one of the leading artists of this movement during the 20th century. Many of the important inventions in technology, science and psychology took place during that period. Just think of the great minds like Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud, who stirred the predominant convictions and beliefs.

Cubism was the springboard for many other art styles, including expressionism, constructivism, vorticism, and futurism. So if you feel drawn to cubist art, it may mean you are also a person who likes to challenge conventionalism!

What does impressionist art say about a person?

You’ve picked the impressionist painting. That means you prefer to avoid conflict, you are agreeable and conscientious.

Fans of impressionism art tend to be diligent individuals who love harmony. Impressionist works probably reflect these personality traits. They are softer and use a rather muted color palette. They don’t aim to offend like abstract or cubist art.

Nevertheless, impressionism was a revolutionary art movement in the 19th century. Claude Monet, one of the founding fathers of impressionism, was fascinated with the play of light. He is famous for producing a series of paintings depicting the same subjects at different times of the day and under different weather conditions.

The impressionist painters rejected both the precise academic style and the emotional concerns of romanticism. Still, impressionist art soon became highly influential. So as a lover of impressionism, you may also have an influential flair about you!

What does renaissance art say about a person?

You’ve picked the renaissance painting. That means you love simplicity, you are rather conservative and traditional.

Fans of the renaissance style tend to be modest individuals who like to have their daily routines. The realistic pieces of that period captured the beauty of the simple things in life. They showed people with real emotions, making it easy for the viewer to connect with the scene on display.

Sandro Botticelli is one of the leading artists of the renaissance movement that developed in the 14th century. It was a revival of European art under the influence of classical models. From the early 16th century, renaissance thinking spread to the rest of Europe and was influential for the next hundred years.

Due this century-long dominance, more conservative characters may be drawn to it for its solid traditional foundation.
